Michael formerly served as Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and recently ended his tenure as Executive Director of the Kofi Annan Foundation. Prior to this position, he served for 30 years with the United Nations. He was the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Cyprus, Deputy Chief of Staff and Director for Political, Peacekeeping and Humanitarian Affairs in the Office of the Secretary-General. Charles has just finished his 27 year career with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) where he held high level positions for the last 18 years. He was WFP Representative and Country Director in Afghanistan and the DR Congo where he led two of the most complex operations for WFP, as well as in Haiti in the late 90's. He also directed operations in the former Yugoslavia during the 1992-95 war in that region. Charles developed and promoted the concept of local procurement of commodities from local farmers' cooperatives and associations.
