The Great Green Wall is an African-led project with an epic ambition: to grow an 8,000km line of plants and trees across the entire African continent. Its goal is to provide food, jobs and a future for the millions of people who live in a region on the frontline of climate change.
Since 2007 Over USD 4 Billion has already been invested by the World Bank, the European Commission, France, Germany, and the United States as well as various large NGO’s and relevant African governments who see this problem beyond a local issue as mass migration is eminent if the land is not restored to productive levels again.
The rapid growth of desertification has led to loss of water sources, land resources, and increases in conflict. By 2020 it is estimated that some 60M people will migrate to Europe & North Africa if local populations lose hope for tangible jobs and assets derived from the increasingly fragile arable land they currently live on.
